LewisGale Salem Half Marathon Goes Virtual

The City of Salem, along with corporate sponsors LewisGale, Virginia’s Blue Ridge and G&H Contracting, announced this afternoon that the Salem Half Marathon, 8K race and Kids Fun Runs are going virtual this year. That means runners will have 16 days to run their respective event, post a time and compete for top placement in the various age groups.

“Our intention all along was to stage the races as we normally do throughout the streets of Salem, but as we all know by now, there is nothing normal about 2020,” says Salem Parks and Recreation Director, John Shaner. “With so much continued uncertainty, the virtual option will allow us to provide runners and citizens with the safest possible options.”

Virtual participants will have until October 18 to register online for their specific event and complete the corresponding distance on their own course.
“From the start, our mission has been to get people moving and that has never been more important than it is right now,” says Assistant Race Director, Ashley Durkin. “We’re looking forward to engaging with the runners virtually through the RaceJoy app while still offering some perks of race day including finish line photos, a Chick-fil-A sandwich, and a free beverage from Olde Salem Brewing Company for all racers over 21.”

Salem has been leading Virginia’s Blue Ridge region in safe event presentation since the pandemic hit in March. Socially distant concerts and drive-in movies have complimented the many ultra-sanitized softball tournaments the city has hosted in the past six months. These events have given convenience stores, restaurants, hotels, and other retail establishments throughout the valley a much-needed economic boost.
“We are thrilled that we have been able to provide as much recreation and entertainment as we have this year, especially with all of the restrictions,” says Shaner. “Taking the half marathon races virtual will allow us to provide another unique opportunity without creating a burden on the many city departments and residents we rely on heavily to make these first-class events.”

We're working on creating a virtual race experience unlike any other. You'll still get race day perks like a Chick-fil-A Sandwich, beverage from Old Salem Brewing Company, plus a coupon from Fleet Feet Roanoke. You'll have an opportunity to get finish line photos on October 10 under the finish line truss. More details will be available soon on the website.

We're glad that you understand that events are expensive, especially when cancelled, and you want us to keep your registration fees to help cover our costs. We deeply appreciate your generosity and look forward to seeing you at an event soon. A portion of the race entry fees will go to the Salem Food Pantry.

We understand that times are tight and this transition to virtual was unexpected. We would love you to consider joining us virtually, but if finances are too tight, we understand. We hope you can join us next time!

Description

The City of Salem, known as "Virginia's Championship City", has hosted numerous NCAA National Championships as well as many other national and international sports tournaments. In 2016, we decided to branch out and bring that "Championship" mentality to running! Our races start and finish at the Salem Farmers Market in downtown Salem, VA and takes you on a scenic tour of Salem through neighborhoods, Roanoke College, and the Roanoke River Greenway.

We have partnered with Blue Ridge Racing, the area's leading road race management organization to produce these events. In addition to managing the LewisGale Salem Half Marathon, Virginia's Blue Ridge 8K, and the G&H Contracting Kids Run, Blue Ridge Racing handles the race management for the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon, also known as "America's Toughest Road Marathon".

As an added bonus to running our Salem Half Marathon, you will have the opportunity to win the Virginia's Blue Ridge Triple Crown race medal if you also complete the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Full or Half Marathon (in April) and the Star City Half Marathon (in November) within the same year. This exciting race series rewards runners in the valley with some serious race medal bling and bragging rights!
